In this role, students are charged with protecting three species of sharks from danger in order to defend the balance of nature in the ecosystem that these top predators help to maintain. Students learn about Lythrum salicaria, commonly referred to as purple loosestrife, and use their new knowledge, maps and their observation skills to identify changes to the land. Students take on various roles in a debate over the development of a salt production facility at San Ignacio Lagoon in Mexico, a real-life issue concerning one of three major gray whale mating and calving sites.

In this one-hour program, Jean-Michel Cousteau travels with his team to the Arctic and sub-Arctic to discover why some beluga groups are thriving and others are disappearing. The relationship between people and belugas is ancient. For more than 4,000 years, hunters of the north have depended on these whales for their own survival in a land with little to offer. These traditional cultures have now partnered with scientists and modern technology to protect the beluga, which, in turn, ensures their own future. Yet these efforts are only a small part of the story as new discoveries have raised troubling questions about the health of belugas and their long-term survival.

Students will play a fun and engaging card game to learn about seabird adaptations and explore some of the environmental challenges (natural and human-induced) seabirds face. The game focuses on the Common Murre.
