Carl Carter - Legacy of Promise

It is with great sadness that we take a moment to recognize an important person in the history of Ohio’s school libraries. At the end of 2021, the library world lost a leading school library proponent, Carl Carter.

Carl was an INFOhio Pioneer. In 1989 a small group of school librarians had a vision: computerize all Ohio school libraries. Carl took on the challenge. At that time, Carl, was the School Library Consultant for the Ohio Department of Education. In that role he was a tireless worker for Ohio’s children. He made decisions based on what was right for students today and in the future. And, he stood firm by his convictions.

He did not take the limelight. Instead, he was a results-oriented servant leader who provided the foundation for INFOhio, the Information Network for Ohio Schools, by securing funding for testing, piloting, implementation and evaluation. By 1995, the first two Ohio school libraries computerized began to see more libraries join largely due to Carl’s efforts. Today INFOhio is a vital part of learning for every Ohio school, now reaching millions of students in all 88 counties.

Those interested in honoring Carl Carter may contribute a Legacy of Promise donation to the Rising Scholars program through Kent State University at Ashtabula. A check can be made out to Kent State University Foundation, and in the memo line, write Ashtabula Rising Scholars/Carl Carter and mailed to: Professor Natalie Huya, Kent State University, 3300 Lake Road West, Ashtabula, OH 44004.

We deeply thank Carl Carter for his vision, his passion, his ability to take on hard work and effect positive change for children. His legacy lives on!

Sincerely,

Theresa M. Fredericka
