ICoach 2022-2023 Post 3: Three Resources

by Sarah Mowery 2 years, 2 months ago

After looking at the Teach & Learn Flyer, what are three resources you would like to use in your classroom? Why did you choose these three?

Fiona Casida 2 years, 1 month ago

1) Digital Video Collection - I like that the videos are aligned to Ohio's learning standards and that some of the videos have teacher guides. Teachers are always looking for quality videos, and I would like to share this resource with them.

2) Points of View Reference Center - English and Speech teachers are always looking for resources that show various perspectives on controversial topics. This will be an excellent resource to share with them and their students.

3) Explora for Grades 9-12 - I never noticed this resource before; I tend to rely on ISearch; however, I like how this resource has the different topic areas listed. It would be helpful for students to view as they begin to select a topic for a research paper or presentation, as well as some great articles to support their topic.

I wanted to share this slide from a training we did this summer for librarians. I think this is a great way to think about using the various EBSCO databases!

The EBSCO slide--that's great!! Although for me, it is often a shuffle :) Thank you for the tips.

Resources

Reasons

World Book Advanced

World Book Advanced saves a ton of money by eliminating the need to purchase Encyclopedias frequently.  Let’s also add the fact that World Book Advanced is available in different languages for our multilinguistic scholars.

Transparent Language

My building is multicultural and having access to over 100 different languages that will assist our students with their reading, writing, and verbal communication, makes this resource must have for my classroom.

Digital Video Collection

Libraries in my school district have transitioned into Career, College and Community Centers.  INFOhio’s Digital Video Collection is  a powerful resource for providing my students with high quality books, lesson plans and other materials that are linked to Ohio’s academic standards.

1.  Bookflix:  I like the idea of paired texts and having students read non-fiction and fiction about a topic or around a theme.

2.  Gale In Context (Elementary):  I love resources that offer current events activities.  I think it is so important for our students to be able to recognize reputable news sources and how to stay informed.

3.  PebbleGo Next:  I like that the texts are engaging and games are always a good way to keep students on task and interacting with the material.

1. Capstone Interactive eBooks: I like that this resource offers eBooks on science and social studies, and that the articles are differentiated to meet the learning needs of all students.

2. Gale in Context: Elementary: I like that this resource offers news articles and current events. I think it is really important to show students current events and give them multiple ways to interact with current events, through video, magazines, and news articles.

3. Science Online: I like the virtual experiments and learning modules that support STEM curriculum. I think the interactive lessons could help students better grasp difficult science topics.

Bookflix- great selction of non- fiction and fiction to use with my students with different themes.

Capstone Interactive  ebooks- great selection supporting science and social studies  to use with the students.

World Book Kids - use when we do  fiction, informational writting to give them different material to use.

1. Transparent Language Online: I've been helping our EL students set up accounts and get started with the program by walking them through a lesson. This is the most amazing resource that is free!

2. Points of View: Great for so many classes but English and Social Studies in particular. Fantastic vetted resources on key topics that spark engagement.

3. Explora for 9-12 is a great one-stop-shop for any teacher trying to get her students to research in databases and other valid sources without having to log into a bunch of different tools.

Bookflix--  the paired texts with audio features for younger students are great and having students read non-fiction and fiction about a topic helps them understand the topic better

World Book Kids-- having the kids doing research at such a young age is fantastic, they can use World Book Kids to get age appropriate information on a topic, they can use audio files if needed, and the use of pictures and video is great

World Almanac for Kids--  just like the World Book Kids, this resouce is interactive and age appropriate learning for younger students

As the district librarian, I have used and will continue to use Bookflix with my elementary students.  It has a fiction and nonfiction book pairing, activities, and lesson plan guides.  It is a wonderful resource for myself, teachers, and students.  I am new to the Capstone Interactive ebooks this year.  I have looked into this resource and recommended it to teachers and students working on biography projects recently.  There is so much more that I can do with this resource.  I have also used World Book Kids this year with students and classes working on animal research projects.  It has pictures, animal sounds, and the ability to read the text to the students.  All great resources.

1. Explora for Grades 6-8: This is a great all-purpose resource that students can use to find a variety of sources on almost any research topic. It can be used in any content area.

2. World Almanac for Kids: I would share this resource with teachers who are looking for standards-aligned lesson plans and printable resources that correspond with the articles and information available on the site.

3. World Book Student: This is a great starter resource for anyone looking for sources that are differentiated and that provide built-in scaffolding, such as read-aloud and translation.

Amanda Whitmore 1 year, 10 months ago

BookFlix- I would like to use present this to teachers to let them know there are paired fiction and nonfiction texts in order for the students to get a variety of both.

PebbleGO Next - I would share this with the teachers to use as a resource for articles and activities to connect real-world experiences with their learning.

World Book Kids - I would use this resource to give the teachers more diverse texts because their are translation features as well as giving them the option to use leveled texts.

These are the three resources that I think are the best fit to promote in my building:

  • Explora: This is a really good fit for the genral inquiry and research that we do in my grades 5-6 building. Explora is a good balance between providing multiple resources without being overwhelming.
  • PebbleGo Next is tailored to the content/standards we cover and strips down the information (and its appearance) to fit our researchers who need that format
  • I'm interested to explore Capstone Interactive eBooks because the Science and Social Studies departments are the ones I interact with the least, so it would be nice to offer them new resources.

ISearch is a database I wouild use during our senior research projects.  It searches all of the library content and database information.
Points of View Reference Center is a definite for our career center.  Our health careers and law enforcement groups often need to access controversial materials.

Science Online is great for our science teachers and gives great hands-on activities and experiments.

World Book Advanced is a great tool especially since we do NOT order book form encyclopedias anymore.  This provides a wide variety of reliable information for students.

The first one I would like to use in my classroom is the digital video collection. This would be helpful to my students that are more audio and visual learners and would help supplement some of my lessons. I could also give more information on topics that students may not fully understand.

The second one I would use in my classroom is the Explora for grades 9-12. I teach English 11 and 12, so my students would be able to utilize this to help them understand primary resources and how to identify reliable sources versus ones that are more for entertainment. This would also be another resource for my students that need a little extra information or a different type of teaching method than what is able to be done in my 40 minute class period.

The final resource I would like to use in my classroom is World Book Advanced. This would tremendously help my students with their word choice and even challenge my students to go above and beyond what they are learning in the classroom or even help my students that are struggling by giving them a different wording on what is being taught.

I have used PebbleGo Next and World Almanac for Kids Elementary already this school year, but I believe that I have so much more to unpack from these two resources. I used this with my students in first grade and fourth grade as research for their writing assignment connected to our reading series. First grade had to focus on a specific animal and its life cycle, while fourth grade focused on a specific animal's adaptations.

The third one is BookFlix to share stories with my students during Tech Time. I would use this during out Tech Time, with Kindergarten and their iPads. to learn how to access this on their assigned device.

I would use Explora, World Book, and the EBSCO eBook Collection. These three resources are excellent for student research projects. POV Reference Center is also great, especially for projects that require students to look at both sides of an issue and to compare/contrast.

Michelle Detter 1 year, 9 months ago

Since I assist the Librarian with research ,I think Explora, World Book and EBSCO would be benefical for student research.

Michele Rittichier 1 year, 9 months ago

Explora, Points of View and World Book Advanced I belive will be helpful with finding additional reserch for my students.

Of the three resources provided on the Teach & Learn Flyer, I am most likely to use World Almanac for Kids, World Book Kids, and Gale In Context: Elementary. The main factor that influenced my decision to choose these resources is that each of these resources are versatile and can be used by any teacher regardless of the subjects they specialize in. I plan on recommending these resources to the teachers at my school as trustworthy and convenient resources to have on hand.

1 - Points of View reference center - As a social studies teacher I am always looking for resources like this.  I even have a book in my collection that contains history lessons from around the world showing the various perspectives.

1 - All three of the World Book resources (various grades) will be great for students and teachers to access ebooks, videos, activities and other materials when conducting research.  I’m excited about the easy access to primary sources.

3 - Digital video collect - this is a no brainer.  Videos are awesome teaching and learning tools and the fact that they are teacher guides included with many of them makes it that much better!

1. Bookflix- this is a great resource for students to have access to fiction and nonfiction texts both at school and at home. I like the nonfiction and fiction book pairings and that there is the option to have the nonfiction text read to them or they can read it on their own. I also like the games/activities that are paired with the book sets.

2. PebbleGo Next- we are always looking for ways to supplement what we are currently using with out students in Science and SS and this gives a lot of options for students and teachers

3. Highlights Library - my PreK-2nd grade students can always use more options for reading. This is a great resource that can be adjusted to a student's reading level and can be read to them or they can read on their own.

Kara Kennedy 1 year, 6 months ago

I would like to use:

1) BookFlix because it has paired fiction and nonfiction texts. I also like how it has visual and auditory activities in it to keep students more engaged.

2) World Almanac for Kids Elementary because it is so hard to find a trusted resource to help our kids build their research skills, so this would be great!

3) World Book for Kids because our kids would be able to do trusted research here, including videos and primary sources. I love that it has read aloud and translation features as well!

The three resources that I'd like to use in my classroom are: Financial Literacy e-books, STEM & Career e-books, and the ScienceFlix site. These were at the top of my list because they related to the subject area that I work in which is special edmathematics at the 9th grade level. Each had its own topics that I found very useful when working with my students. The Financial Literacy e-book covered so many basic skills that our high schoolers need with managing their money, the STEM & Career e-book was a wonderful resource to provide students with possible options of working within the STEM industry, and the ScienceFlix site provided so many outlets for students to learn about STEM topics and hands on projects.
