I have not used BookNook with students, but only because I just learned about it, and I think it's a wonderful resource, so I hope you don't mind my answering these questions from a speculative perspective rather than an experience perspective :)

Do student-created book trailers automatically added to catalog records in Fetch and ISearch add value to your OPAC?  (For librarians only)

Yes! I think it would add a lot of value. Students love the BookToks and it has encouraged reading (even older titles), so adding a student created visual to a book would increase interest.

  • What value does access to a browsable collection of student-created book trailers have?

It would increase student interest, and it might increase circulation, but that would have to be analyzed.

  • How do you use Book Nook in your library or classroom  with your students?

I don't right now as I just learned about it, but I would love to have the trailers on a continuous loop playing in the media center (if that's possible)

  • Which of the following do you think would be beneficial for students as they search Book Nook for book trailers? Why?

Keyword. Students don't care about lexile level; they are much more likely to search by interest.

  1. Ability to search the collection by grade level.

  2. Ability to search the collection by Lexile level.

  3. Ability to search the collection by keyword.

Hi Fiona,

Thank you for your input, despite having not used it yet! I hope after you do use it, you'll report back as well.

I agree that Book Nook can increase student interest. Especially the learners who are very visual, are creative and like to create things. Also, I think lexile levels are needed but mostly for Educator use. Not so sure children need to know what lexile level their books are.

We appreciate your feedback and can't wait to hear back when you start using Book Nook!

I have not used Book Nook. I have had issues finding the subject I was doing. Sadly I really havent used it since. I know there is a lot of vaue of seeing other students talking about the books. I would like to look it up again and try to use it in my library.

I have used BookNook in my HS ELA classroom. In the past, students have created book trailers to post, but the various technologies always present problems (formatting files correctly, etc.). I now mostly use it to show students examples of projects students have created in the past.

I think the if students were able to search by grade level and/or lexile level to find books for reading independently it would be useful. Currenlty, my students have a lot of trouble locating books that puch the higher Lexile levels they needs to experience in grades 9-12 that are also interesting to read. Without a school library or easy access to public libraries, it is also difficult for my students to physically find books to read. Maybe some sort of cross connection between other InfOhio resources would be useful.

Hello Megan!

Thanks for this feedback. While getting to know the resource, I found that you can set the Lexile level range. Its directly under the "browse all" box.

It allows you to set the lexile range from 1- 1800. Its sort of hidden on the site, and not easy to see right away.

https://hub.lexile.com/lexile-grade-level-charts: I looked this up for some guidance on what grades go with what levels.

Hope this helps both you and your students!

Thank you for your input
