    Overview

Students will practice developing a topic with reason and evidence.

    Introduction

All projects need to include content, a focus, and citations. You'll focus your project by developing a thesis statement. There are different ways to format your project and citations. Your audience, which may be your teacher, will usually determine the style you should use to format your project and citations.

    Practice Formatting Your Essay

You are ready to begin writing your research paper, but, before you can begin, you need to know how to format your research paper. Whether you use Google Docs or Microsoft Word, how you format your research paper depends on the style guide your teacher has asked you to follow. Ask your teacher if you are expected to follow the MLA or APA style guide.

formSelect and read the style guide you are expected to use for your research paper. In the table below, you will find guidelines and sample papers from OWL Purdue detailing the format for both MLA and APA style guides. Pay close attention to the following formatting criteria for the style guide you are expected to follow.

    • Title, Name, Date
    • Margins and Line Spacing
    • Font and Font Size
    • Works Cited or Reference Page
    • In-Text Citations

    Practice Comparing Different Citation Generators

After reviewing the basic format for citations in the previous lesson, it's time to practice with a variety of citation generators. Citation generators are available on a variety of INFOhio resources and will autogenerate a citation in the style of your choice. However, not all citation generators are the same, and you should always check the generated citation with the style guide.

readCreate a citation for the article Body Conscious.

Practice Drafting a Works Cited Page

Throughout your research paper or project, you include in-text citations to give credit to the original author. But what if your reader wants to learn more about the ideas cited in your paper or project? Your works cited or reference page is an index of all of the sources you used to help inform the content of your research paper or project and is located at the end of your paper or project. Curious readers can use your works cited or reference page as a springboard for their own investigation.
