In this interactive, students add and subtract plays on a football field to practice working with negative and positive integers on the number line. Each set of randomized drives consists of seven to nine plays and ends with a touchdown. Plays are represented with equations. When students place the football at the correct point for each play, the answer to the corresponding equation is automatically filled in. The accompanying activity suggests ways that teachers can integrate the interactive into the classroom setting.

This task makes for a good follow-up task on rational irrational numbers after that the students have been acquainted with some of the more basic properties. In addition to eliciting several different types of reasoning, the task requires students to rewrite radical expressions in which the radicand is divisible by a perfect square (N-RN.2).

The scope of this video lesson consists in studying the sets of Rational and Irrational numbers. The main objectives for the students are: 1) Learning how to distinguish between a rational number and an irrational number; 2) Learning about the existence of 2 infinities: the "countable infinity" for sets of Rational numbers and the "uncountable infinity" for the set of irrational numbers; and 3) Learning to use straightforward and advanced tools from Mathematics to reach goals (1) and (2).
