This activity is a classroom lab where students test common household liquids for pH level on the pH continuum, 1-14. They compare and contrast everyday use of the liquids, and how this relates to the liquids' pH property.
In this physics interactive lecture demonstration, students will investigate the effects of …
In this physics interactive lecture demonstration, students will investigate the effects of acceleration due to gravity in a number of different situations using a plastic water bottle. Based on an original activity from Peter Hopkinson, AAPT.
Students will make observations at two different locations and will infer the …
Students will make observations at two different locations and will infer the geological events that happened at each location to explain what they see and create questions for further study.
This activity is an inquiry investigation where students gather data on why …
This activity is an inquiry investigation where students gather data on why the Cartesian diver sinks or floats. They then develop a new question and then conduct a new investigation by changing one variable and repeat the altered experiment and record their conclusions.
This activity is a field investigation where students gather data on rock …
This activity is a field investigation where students gather data on rock types and geologic formations to construct a geologic column that will help them to interpret the geologic history of the Cannon Falls area.
This observational inquiry activity involving careful descriptions of rocks and fossil including …
This observational inquiry activity involving careful descriptions of rocks and fossil including age will be used to create a scalar accurate geologic time scale. Students will observe and learn that the geologic time scale was created based on changes in fossil, rock, and atmospheric changes.
This guided inquiry activity is designed to help students understand the effectiveness …
This guided inquiry activity is designed to help students understand the effectiveness of inclined planes to reduce the amount of force needed to move an object.
In this investigation, students gather biotic and abiotic data and samples in …
In this investigation, students gather biotic and abiotic data and samples in the field, develop an experiment to test another abiotic factor in the lab, synthesize group data, interpret their findings and make a claim on the health of the wetland ecosystem.
This activity is a field investigation where students make observations in the …
This activity is a field investigation where students make observations in the Minnesota River valley, discuss their findings amongst other student groups, and describe how those observations fit with the general geology of Minnesota.
In this activity, students are split into groups and assigned different ocean …
In this activity, students are split into groups and assigned different ocean regions. These include the Arabian Sea, Equatorial Pacific, North Atantic, and Southern Ocean. Each group uses Google Earth to view NASA satellite chlorophyll imagery and the cruise track of data collected as part of the U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study. At three locations along each cruise track, chlorophyll-temperature-depth (CTD) and bottle data collected as part of the study can be downloaded. Students work with the data to identify oceanographic features as a function of depth and then make simple calculations.
Students will make observations of weathering on different rock types in a …
Students will make observations of weathering on different rock types in a cemetery. Students will also make observations of rock types of the Minneopa Falls.
This activity is a lab inquiry-base lesson on the rock cycle. Students …
This activity is a lab inquiry-base lesson on the rock cycle. Students will look at the parts of the rock cycle by examining three rocks. Based on their observations and data they collect they should be able to develop a hypothesis and an experiment to test this hypothesis.
Students use an inquiry approach to describe the major biomes of Minnesota …
Students use an inquiry approach to describe the major biomes of Minnesota before taking a look at adaptations that make organisms successful in their environments.
This activity is an outdoor lab in which students investigate the process …
This activity is an outdoor lab in which students investigate the process of evaporation, record their findings, and use the data to make connections to the environment around them.
In this science activity, students investigate the water cycle by testing the …
In this science activity, students investigate the water cycle by testing the water evaporated from leaves (transpiration) in a field experience. Students use elements of this information to track the water cycle through it's various stages.
This activity is a field investigation where students collect and design an …
This activity is a field investigation where students collect and design an experiment to identify the water quality of a section of the North Branch of the Root River in Lanesboro, MN. The investigation is done in collaboration with Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.
In this activity students collect snow in a cup, predict how much …
In this activity students collect snow in a cup, predict how much water will be in the cup when the snow melts. Students are exposed to evaporation as the water "disappears" over time and try to stop this from happening.
