Biology 2e is designed to cover the scope and sequence requirements of a typical two-semester biology course for science majors. The text provides comprehensive coverage of foundational research and core biology concepts through an evolutionary lens. Biology includes rich features that engage students in scientific inquiry, highlight careers in the biological sciences, and offer everyday applications. The book also includes various types of practice and homework questions that help students understand—and apply—key concepts. The 2nd edition has been revised to incorporate clearer, more current, and more dynamic explanations, while maintaining the same organization as the first edition. Art and illustrations have been substantially improved, and the textbook features additional assessments and related resources.

Paul Andersen explains how DNA replication ensures that each cell formed during the cell cycle has an exact copy of the DNA. He describes the Meselson-Stahl experiment and how it showed that DNA copies itself through a semi-conservative process. He then explains how multiple enzymes, like DNA polymerase, helicase, primase, ligase, and single strand binding proteins copy DNA. [10:09]

DNA must replicate (copy) itself so that each resulting cell after mitosis and cell division has the same DNA as the parent cell. DNA replication occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle, before mitosis and cell division. The base pairing rules are crucial for the process of replication. DNA replication occurs when DNA is copied to form an identical molecule of DNA. Learn more about dna structure and replication in this learning module produced by CK-12.

Matt Meselson takes us on a journey through his long and storied career, including 60 years as a Harvard biology professor. From memories of his earliest science experiments as a small child to his non-traditional learning path, which included service learning during WWII, to musings on the spirit of cooperation in managing a pandemic and the future of biology and humanity, this episode gives us an insight into a legendary figure in biology. A new virtual interview series from LabXchange at Harvard University, the Xchange showcases the diverse roles, projects, and initiatives that make up the intersecting fields of science, education, and health. Hosted by LabXchange Faculty Director Robert Lue, our first season features a range of perspectives on the impact of COVID-19.
