This activity consists of classroom lessons where children observe tree leaves and compare and contrast those leaves leading to an understanding of the terms deciduous and evergreen (and also coniferous). They then use that learning to help them identify the kind of tree based on samples on a chart.

Carbon calculators, no matter how well intended as tools to help measure energy footprints, tend to be black boxes and can produce wildly different results, depending on the calculations used to weigh various energy factors. By comparing different calculators, learners can analyze which ones are the most accurate and relevant, and which are the most transparent.

This lab activity is designed to allow students to experience what an increase in mechanical advantage means. Students determine the mechanical advantage of three pulley set-ups. Students also measure the work input and output, then calculate the efficiency. Finally, students determine the relationship between the mechanical advantage and the efficiency of the pulleys.

In this model eliciting activity (MEA), students are hired by a travel magazine to determine if two airlines that fly into Chicago are equally reliable. They examine data of flight arrival delay times for both airlines flying out of the same city. They first identify measures that can be used to compare the two airlines. Working in small groups, the students decide the size of a meaningful difference between the airlines for each measure and use that information to determine a rule that for deciding if one airline is more reliable than another. The students apply their rule to flight arrival delay data for the two airlines from four additional departure cities, and use the results to write a report to the magazine editor on whether or not one airline is more reliable than the other. This activity can serve as an introduction to ideas of central tendency and variability, and prepares students for formal approaches to comparing groups.

The lesson is designed for fourth grade students using scientific investigation to identify and compare the basic parts of a plant and animal cells. This activity consists of several steps over a period of several days. It includes student use of microscopes for observations and journals to collect data to identify and classify the basic parts of plant and animal cells. The assessment has an individual component and uses student work.
