Student groups are given captioned photographs of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant facility and surrounding towns taken before and 28 years after the 1986 disaster. Based on the captions and clues in the images, they arrange them in sequential order. While viewing the completed sequence of images, students reflect on what it might have been like to be there, and ask themselves: what were people thinking, doing and saying at each point? This activity assists students in gaining an understanding of how devastating nuclear meltdowns can be, which underscores the importance of responsible engineering. It is recommended that this activity be conducted before the associated lesson, Nuclear Energy through a Virtual Field Trip.

The accompanying worksheet further encourages students to see themselves as heroes in their unique ways! "Be a Hero" activities encourage students to think about the impact of their actions and how to use their influence for good. How are you a hero to those around you? [4:39]

Just like Daniel Tiger and Miss Elaina, the children in your classroom are still learning how to be a friend, how to compromise, and how to work together to solve a problem. By seeing how Daniel Tiger and Miss Elaina work out their conflict, children are learning strategies that they can apply to their own friendships. And just as Fred Rogers shared with previous generations, Daniel Tiger shares the message that one of life's greatest joys is the comfortable give-and-take of a good friendship. It's a wonderful feeling not only to have a friend, but to know how to be a friend yourself. In this set of resources, we will focus on how you can help children work on expressing their feelings and ideas, listen to each other and work together to solve a problem or conflict. Watch the videos about Friendship and think about how you could use them as part of the classroom activity or throughout the year as children work on friendship skills.
