Students should be able to recognize what makes one number greater or smaller than another, using place value understanding which is crucial to Common Core mastery. This lesson combines math and science by having students order planets according to temperature. A detailed plan and video of students engaged in the lesson are included.

A part of the sorting and classifying standard that can be overlooked relates to assigning a number count to a group of similar objects. This lesson helps students find similar groups and practice counting and relating numbers to their sorted groups using an app on an iPad. This lesson contains buddy work with older students, pictures of students working together, and a printable count and match checklist.

Comparing the number of objects in two groups, using one-to one-correspondence, is a foundational skill that students will build on as they begin to compare numbers. This lesson will allow students to practice this skill in small groups. Pictures and videos of the lesson in action are included.
