This lesson, based on the animated story "Welcome Home Balto" from the PBS KIDS series MOLLY OF DENALI, helps children use visual imagery to enhance comprehension while listening to and reading informational texts. After Molly hears the story of Balto, a real sled dog who became a hero to children in Alaska, she decides that he should be memorialized in a statue. In the lesson, students make mental images of Balto's historic journey and compare them to Molly's images. Then they apply the use of imagery within the context of a current unit of study. Media and support materials are provided.

This "jigsaw" activity will give students the opportunity to work in groups to summarize a 1 to 2 page informational text. It "jigsaws" down to 1 class summary and can be done in 2 or 3 days. This plan was designed for a class of 22 students but can be easily modified by varying group size.
