The 1930s saw a steadily increasing campaign of Japanese aggression in China, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and culminating in the outbreak of full-scale war between the two powers in 1937. Each instance of aggression resulted in denunciations from the United States, but the administrations of the time understood that there was no will on the part of the American public to fight a war in East Asia.

Rodin's The Gates of Hell
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

This art history video discussion examines Auguste Rodin's "The Gates of Hell" 1880-1917, plaster (Musee d'Orsay, Paris). When the building, earlier on the site of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, was destroyed by fire during the Commune in 1871, plans were drawn up to replace it with a museum of decorative arts. Rodin won the competition to design a great set of doors for its entry way. Although the museum was never built, Rodin continued to work on the doors. They became an ongoing project; a grand stage for his sculptural ideas. It's fitting that the plaster of this great unfinished sculpture, The Gates of Hell, is now on display at the d'Orsay, the former railway terminal that was built on this site instead of the museum of decorative arts and that, by lovely coincidence, was converted into one of the world's great art museums.

Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

Students explore the world of George Clinton and his impact on the music industry through sampling. They will start with a 5-minute activity where they listen to George Clinton talk about sampling and summarize his views. Next, they'll listen to songs that have sampled George Clinton's music, comparing them to the original versions. Students then create their own beat or song using George Clinton's music. After class, students have at least 20 minutes to continue working on their beat or song and can choose to share it on Instagram, email it to the teacher, or submit it to Kinfolk Education for a chance to be featured on social media. This lesson provides students with a hands-on way to understand the significance of sampling in the music industry and the impact of influential figures like George Clinton.

Estimated time required: 1-2 class periods.

Technology required for this lesson: Augmented Reality, Internet Connectivity, Laptop/Desktop, Smartphone, Tablet, Tablet or Smartphone.
