Career advising is "an integrated process that helps students understand how their personal interests, strengths, and values might predict satisfaction and success in school and related career fields, as well as how to tie these interests and strengths to academic and career goals" (Gordon, V.N. 2007). The framework in which career advising occurs is defined as Career Connections. The Career Connection Framework is designed to support students in the development of a vision and realistic plan for their futures - during K-12 and beyond through career advising.

Ohio’s College Credit Plus can help you earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses from community colleges or universities. The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to college-ready students.

For some students, they see more value in school (“Why do I have to learn this?”) when they can connect learning with real world situations and future jobs. The ordered school-building closure and other measures taken in response to the coronavirus health crisis affect the educator licensure process for both current and prospective educators. Impacts include the closure of many background check locations and licensure examination testing sites and challenges to completing professional development requirements. Background checks, professional development and testing are typical requirements for both current educators and prospective educator candidates to receive or renew educator licenses.

The ongoing coronavirus health crisis has not disrupted the ability of the Ohio Department of Education to receive and process applications and renewals for licensure. The Office of Educator Licensure currently is processing applications within five business days and is ready to assist educators, schools and districts with their licensure-related inquiries and needs.

Social-emotional learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Research demonstrates that students who receive support for social and emotional learning in schools do better academically, socially and behaviorally. Social-emotional learning has also been shown to positively impact economic mobility and mental health outcomes. Developing these skills in our students is an important part of meeting the needs of the whole child.

Career advising in Ohio is designed to support students in developing a vision and realistic plan for their futures across the K-12 spectrum. Ultimately, the purpose of career advising is to prepare students for a pathway of post-high school success, as prescribed in the Ohio Department of Education’s Each Child Our Future Strategic Plan.
