This is an online photocopy of the original of the children's book Kind Words Awaken Kind Echoes (Illustrations of the Power of Kindness) by Thomas Nelson & Sons, a nonfiction book about the power of kindness.
Students will read the story and describe the picture details of the illustrations in relation to the text and write about one of the story events. "Go, Dog, Go!" contains illustrations that are very elaborate and crazy while the text is easy to read making this the perfect book for this lesson.
The objective of this lesson is for students to understand how an author uses language and illustrations to influence the way readers think and feel about characters and events in a story. Students are asked to evaluate the introduction and illustrations found in "The Story of Ruby Bridges."
Students will participate in a picture walk through the expository text "Seasons and Weather". The purpose of the picture walk is to prepare the students for reading the story and gives them practice in using picture clues to make meaning. It gives them a sense of the text and an idea of what they will be reading about.
The students will develop independent reading skills by using the illustrations. The teacher will read a selection of books and ask students to tell what they see in the book. Comments will lead to the conclusion that pictures tell us what was happening in the story. A video of the lesson in action is provided along with book suggestions.
The class will read the informational text "Together They Were Better". As the teacher reads the book aloud, she/he will use the illustrations from each page to give students clues as to the text on the page, helping them to see the relationship between the pictures and the words. The powerpoint of the book is included, as long as extension activities.
In this lesson, through guided practice, the students use two texts about Martin Luther King to compare the similarities and differences between those texts. Includes videos of the lesson in action, printable charts, and a graphic organizer.
Students will look at examples of illustrations and diagrams in informational texts and discuss how each one helps enhance the text. Students gain the knowledge that sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words because a complex idea can be explained with just a single image. Included are printable handouts, videos of student work, and rubrics for assessment.
In this lesson, the teacher will read a book about different landforms. The children will learn about the features of the landforms and how they were shaped by natural forces. Then text features will be discussed. The children will then explain how a text feature, such as images or diagrams, helped them to understand the scientific content more clearly.
As adults, we explore pictures, captions, diagrams and text, when reading any kind of informational piece. Kids can do this too! In this lesson, students will sort information that was obtained from pictures and diagrams, from that obtained from text when reading an informational piece.
