Students meet a scientist who created software that looks at images of cells and determines which images show cells that have responded to potential medicines. Students will learn about how this technology is currently enabling research to identify new antibiotics to treat tuberculosis. Students will complete hands-on activities that demonstrate how new medicines can be discovered using robots and computer software, starring the student as "the computer." International markets are very important to soybean farmers across the globe. In this unit, students in a Spanish language class will explore the idea of a bioeconomy and research case studies of Spanish-speaking countries trying to compete in the global marketplace by growing soybeans. This curriculum has been designed as a transdisciplinary 2-week unit using the theme of sustainability to combine proficiency-based world language pedagogy with the real-world relevance of problem-based learning at the heart of STEM education. This unit features 5 lessons and 17 files. Lessons are aligned to NGSS.

This PBL lesson will set writing expectations for the class at the beginning of the year. By creating a rubric for writing, students will examine the language of the standards, identify nunanced differences in criteria for different scores on writing assessments, establish expectations for writing during the school year, and collaborate with peers to engage in creating an authentic product.
