This set of lessons extends over several days and focuses on "The Crisis, No. 1" by Thomas Paine. Students closely read and annotate the text. Students identify and evaluate claims and evidence in the text. Students present their findings to the class. Finally, students collaboratively write short arguments identifying claims and evidence in "The Crisis, No. 1." This set of lessons extends over several days. Students watch a Prezi and take notes about the classical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos). Students then read and annotate (focusing on the classical appeals) Winston Churchill's "Be Ye Men of Valour" and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation." Students work in groups to complete a graphic organizer which helps them analyze the classical appeals in the speeches. Finally, students write an analysis of ethos, pathos, and logos in one of the speeches.

Students will begin to understand the concept of maps by describing the path that Little Red Riding Hood took on the way to Grandma's house. Main Curriculum Tie: Social Studies - Kindergarten, Standard 3 Objective 1, Identify geographic terms that describe their surroundings. Many fairy tales and nursery rhymes take the characters on a path through the rhyme/story. In this lesson, we will be making up maps for the characters to follow. In the first activity, the class will be recreating a map of the path that Little Red Riding Hood takes to Grandma’s house. The students will be exploring basic map directions and characteristics.

This unit can vary according to the teacher, the children and the time allotted. It can take up to two weeks or as short as 1 week. Each step can lead to other avenues. Feel free to eliminate or use what would be successful for your children.
