Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday

In the story, Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday, Alexander receives a dollar from his grandparents that he plans to save, but he spends it all, a little at a time. In this lesson, students count by 2s to fill a container with 100 pennies. They are asked whether 100 pennies is the same amount of money as one dollar. They listen to the story, and as Alexander spends his money, students come up and remove the correct number of pennies from a container. At the end of the story, students are again asked if 100 pennies is the same amount of money as one dollar. Students discuss the choices that Alexander made and give advice on how he could save his money to reach his goal of buying a walkie-talkie.

This is a full 18-week curriculum organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. The resources, lessons and activities in this guide are aligned with Ohio’s high school Model Financial Literacy Curriculum. The guide covers 18 weeks (1 semester) and is divided into 3-week long units for each of the six topics. Each topic’s content statements have been sequenced so that new subject matter builds on concepts already covered. Learning expectations are found under each day's lesson selection.

This guide contains resources drawn primarily from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’s Econ Lowdown® economic education website, with additional material from the Cleveland Fed and other Federal Reserve System websites, and from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Multiple resources are provided for teaching each content statement to allow for more choice when tailoring lesson plans.

According to Ohio's Learning Standards for Financial Literacy, "Financial Literacy is defined as the ability to read, analyze, manage and communicate about personal financial conditions that affect one's material well-being. It includes the ability to discern financial choices, discuss money and financial issues without (or despite) discomfort, plan for the future and respond completely to life events that affect every day financial decisions, including events in the general economy."This content pack is intended to be a way to discover new resources and lessons for financial literacy that can be used in grades 9-12. The standards being referenced are ODEW Site: Ohio's Financial Literacy Standards for Financial Literacy, page 9 (high school). Though it is not mentioned here, it may hit additional standards within Social Studies, Mathematics, or other topics within Financial Literacy.
