Coding is quickly becoming one of the biggest buzz words in education. However, teaching students to code can be intimidating. Join us as we discuss techniques for teaching coding concepts such as cause and effect, logic, and problem solving. Then we’ll dive into the CS First Curriculum to explore activities, lesson plans, and more.

Khan Academy learning modules include a Community space where users can ask questions and seek help from community members. Educators should consult with their Technology administrators to determine the use of Khan Academy learning modules in their classroom. Join us in exploring the intersection of beat-making and coding, with a focus on the beat machine and the origins of Boom Bap. There will also be an interactive session using EarSketch, a platform developed by Georgia Tech that uses code to create beats and music.

Students put their STEAM knowledge and skills to the test by creating indoor light fixture “clouds” that mimic current weather conditions or provide other colorful lighting schemes they program and control with smartphones. Groups fabricate the clouds from paper lanterns and pillow stuffing, adding LEDs to enable the simulation of different lighting conditions. They code the controls and connect the clouds to smart devices and the Internet cloud to bring their floating clouds to life as they change color based on the weather outside.
