Biology 2e is designed to cover the scope and sequence requirements of a typical two-semester biology course for science majors. The text provides comprehensive coverage of foundational research and core biology concepts through an evolutionary lens. Biology includes rich features that engage students in scientific inquiry, highlight careers in the biological sciences, and offer everyday applications. The book also includes various types of practice and homework questions that help students understand—and apply—key concepts. The 2nd edition has been revised to incorporate clearer, more current, and more dynamic explanations, while maintaining the same organization as the first edition. Art and illustrations have been substantially improved, and the textbook features additional assessments and related resources.

Vision is the primary sense of many animals and much is known about how vision is processed in the mammalian nervous system. One distinct property of the primary visual cortex is a highly organized pattern of sensitivity to location and orientation of objects in the visual field. But how did we learn this? An important tool is the ability to design experiments to map out the structure and response of a system such as vision. In this activity, students learn about the visual system and then conduct a model experiment to map the visual field response of a Panoptes robot. (In Greek mythology, Argus Panoptes was the "all-seeing" watchman giant with 100 eyes.) A simple activity modification enables a true black box experiment, in which students do not directly observe how the visual system is configured, and must match the input to the output in order to reconstruct the unseen system inside the box.

This tutorial looks at the anatomy of the eye and how the sense of sight works. This is the first part of a learning module. Subsequent sections cover how images are formed and detected, the concept of accommodation where the eye adjusts its focus, and how farsightedness and nearsightedness are corrected. Includes detailed calculations using physics formulas, e.g., to find the quantitative relationship between the object distance, image distance, and focal length.

In this scene from the 2008 Masterpiece adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, the Dashwood sisters and their mother first see their new home, Barton Cottage, a simple dwelling set against the tumultuous north Devon coast-and the viewer experiences it with them. As the camera swoops over the untamed sea, the cottage first appears large, then insignficant when set against the vast landscape. The Dashwood family, now very far away from the "civilized" world of society, is on its own. As we follow the family as they enter the cottage, each character's reaction-Mrs. Dashwood is overwhelmed, Marianne pronounces it "romantic," and Elinor is practical-reinforces what we already know about their personalities. The romance between Edward and Elinor is, for many, the heart of Sense and Sensibility, and Edward's proposal serves as the climax of the 2008 Masterpiece adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. From the moment Edward arrives at the cottage, there is a palpable sense of suspense. As the scene unfolds-Edward declares his love and Elinor accepts amidst tears of joy-the happiness that the characters experience is so real and powerful that we find ourselves cheering them on.
