Principals need support, not only in their early years, but throughout their careers. Support and encouragement can come from networks of principals who meet regularly to share problems and solutions and reflect on their practice. Districts can provide support from those who have "earned authority" and who are respected from having excelled in the principalship. Prevention strategies for principal "burnout" may include spreading leadership to teacher-leaders, retention incentives, and providing resources to principals to accomplish their work. Teaching during a pandemic has undoubtedly been stressful, and it has left many teachers feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious. For many teachers, these feelings have led to burnout and compassion fatigue, and for others the significant demands of this new reality have caused depression. If you are experiencing burnout, adjust your routine and make a self-care plan that allows for more downtime. You can explore the numerous mental health apps to find one that works for you. On the other hand, if your symptoms are more consistent with depression, do not hesitate, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician and contact your EAP for help in finding a therapist. Remember, your students benefit the most when you are performing at your best. So, take care of you!

PBS: Strategies to Build Engaging Digital Lessons for High School Students

In this blog, a teacher offers strategies for building engaging digital lessons as a result of the Covid Pandemic. My first task is to figure out how to make my lessons clear. I am working without the benefit of being able to circle the room, providing clarifying directions and directly addressing students who may need additional scaffolds or support. Therefore, the lessons I create need to have relatively simple learning objectives. Although critical thinking remains important, this is not the time for multi-layered assignments that require the interplay of several objectives and different roles for students.
