How we can be in the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state of our nervous system or the sympathetic "fight or flight" at any given moment. In both cases, we can only operate in one or the other brain networks at any given moment. Here is an overview of the focuses of these two networks whose primary functions are to assist brain operation. Imagine them as opposing sides of a teeter-totter; when one side is up, the other must be down.

Schools will improve when principals are given the autonomy to make decisions that best solve their school-based problems. Coupled with this autonomy is the accountability to produce significant improvement. The upper level bureaucracy which made decisions for schools in the past often produced poor results. Principals with this autonomy have greater buy-in and ownership of their schools. A prime illustration of this need for autonomy will be the complex implementation of the Common Core Standards. This is an example of change which may best be done with central office support, not direction. Consists of three videos.

The key role of the principal is instructional leader. However, there are many pressures that prevent principals from getting into classrooms to help teachers build their instructional capacity. The traditional time-consuming observation cycle may be a key problem. To retain highly effective teachers requires the principal to attend to working conditions and demonstrate keen attention to instructional leadership. A new role may be emerging for a "school administration manager" who will allow the principal to spend more time with instructional improvement. Consists of four videos. Log-in may be required.

Schools are prioritizing students’ mental health, and there are many tools and resources to choose from. CDC created this action guide as a place to start. It can help school and district leaders build on what they are already doing to promote students’ mental health and find new strategies to fill in gaps.

The action guide describes six in-school strategies that are proven to promote and support mental health and well-being. For each strategy, the guide also describes approaches, or specific ways to put the strategy into action, and examples of evidence-based policies, programs, and practices.
